The launch film · 48 seconds

Your clipboard holds one thing. Copy again, and it’s gone.

Now every copy is kept.

It lives in the notch.

Move your pointer into the notch, or press ⌃⌘V. Click a card to copy it, and Cache gets out of the way so ⌘V lands where you were.

Knows what things are.

Text, links, colours, code, files and images, each in its own filter.

Every screenshot, filed.

A new screenshot lands the moment macOS saves it, and Cache follows your screenshot folder if you move it.

Text recognised on-device

Search the words inside your screenshots.

Every screenshot is read on your Mac, so a receipt turns up by its order number.

New in 2.1

Delete, with a way back.

Hover a card and click the trash. Change your mind, and Undo brings it back.

Nothing leaves your Mac.

No account. No sync. No network requests.

Passwords? Never saved.

Password managers mark what they copy as concealed. Cache skips those copies before it reads a single byte.

No networking code

No analytics, no crash reports, no update check. Cache makes no requests of any kind, and the code is open, so you can check.

Kept in one folder

Your history lives in Application Support on your Mac, and nowhere else. Clear History, or delete the folder, and it’s gone.

You decide what’s kept

Pause capture from the notch. Ignore apps or kinds of content in Settings. Star what should outlast Clear History.

Never leave the keyboard.

Open it, find it, copy it and get back to work without reaching for the trackpad.

The details.

Colours, decoded.

Copy a colour and it arrives as a swatch, with HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK one click away.

A glance at every copy.

The notch widens for a moment to show what you copied. Switch it off in Settings if you’d rather not.

Collections and stars.

File clips into collections of your own. Starred clips survive Clear History and the history limit.

Drag it anywhere.

Drag a card into any app. Screenshots arrive as files, with their real names.

No notch? Still at home.

On displays without one, Cache unrolls from the middle of the menu bar.

Open source

An app that sees everything you copy should be one you can read.

Cache is MIT-licensed and about 5,500 lines of Swift, built with SwiftUI, AppKit, SwiftData and Vision. Read every line, build it yourself, or watch it in a network monitor.

Cache 2.1

Give your notch a memory.

Version 2.1.0 · 2.8 MB disk image · All releases

macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Apple silicon and Intel · Free and open source

Opening it for the first time

Cache isn’t signed with a paid Apple Developer certificate yet, so macOS asks you to approve it once.

  1. Open the disk image and drag Cache onto Applications.
  2. Open Cache. When macOS says it can’t verify the app, click Done.
  3. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, and click Open Anyway next to “Cache” was blocked.

On macOS 14 Sonoma, right-click Cache in Applications and choose Open instead. Or, in Terminal: xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Cache.app

Then allow Cache to open your screenshot folder, and screenshots start arriving. There’s no Dock icon: move your pointer into the notch, or press ⌃⌘V.
